About Us
How We Started
Dewetsdorp Golf Club, founded in 1921 just before World War 2, was a corrugated building. In 1955, Guy Haddad took the initiative to build Dewetsdorp Golf Club its own brick-layered Clubhouse for 750 Pounds. In 1971 Guy Haddad's son, Mel Haddad became the President of the Golf Club and started adding on and enlarging the clubhouse to about 350 square metres. Dewetsdorp Golf Club had acquired approximately 100 members in this time. In 1984 Mel Haddad urged and pioneered the club to build grass greens (Pennaway Bent). The greens harnessed a lot of attention, so much so that neighbouring towns started joining the Golf Club. The new grass course was officially opened on the 20 April 1985. For the next 40 years Mel Haddad would be the Captain of the Dewetsdorp Golf Club and grow the club to approximately 250 members from across the Free State. The club saw the hosting of many many golf days with local celebrities and well-known businessmen. Unfortunately, tragedy struck the club on the night of 12 June 2016 when the clubhouse was gutted by a raging fire. After 4 years of prolonged waiting to rebuild the beloved clubhouse, the committee finally got the approval from the local municipality to rebuild the clubhouse. This rebuild was spearheaded by our current committee and we are excited about all that lies ahead.
